hyperactive

Category: Web videogame

Published: 2024

Summary:

"Hyperactive" is an interactive interface that can help improve cognitive abilities in children with ADHD, and presents a positive attitude towards them, and towards the disorder. The interface includes a four-stage game and explanatory videos that appear after each stage, encouraging users to continue practicing and accepting themselves as they are. ADHD is a cognitive difficulty that is always surrounded by feelings of shame, ineffective and depressing medication and loneliness. As someone with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, I remember that the attitude towards it was always negative, in general and mainly therapeutically. I have a desire to fix it and give a positive play therapy experience.

The project was made as a Fourth year final project, in the Department of Visual Communication,Wizo Haifa.

game narrative and character design

Level 1:

Focuses on memory and impulsivity. The game begins by entering the first dimension, where there is a gear that contains the All the characters in all kinds of colors. The goal is to catch 2 figures that are identical in shape and color.

Level 2:

Focuses on general inattention and distraction by external stimulation. At this stage, the normal characters are presented as a combination of 2 characters, and the player's goal is to match and complete the characters according to the shape of either the top or the bottom. The parts of the characters appear on stairs that move in the frame, and around there is a background that is always in motion and its color changes.

Level 3:

Focuses on disobeying instructions and anger management. At this stage there is a "template" in the middle of the frame with the shape of a certain character. You have to adapt the character to it as soon as it appears, but there is a twist - the characters make certain voices that characterize them. If I matched the correct character to the template but its sound does not belong to it, it will be considered a disqualification.

Level 4:

Focuses on avoiding continuous mental effort and disorganization and organization. The player is in the last stage of the game. He has to click on the character that appears in the background and he must not stop clicking or not follow it with the mouse.

The player is "sucked" into one dimension and his goal is to get out of it back to reality. In the dimensions, we have 5 lovely characters, which every single character represents the criteria's of the ADHD (based on the DSM5).

1.Endeavorrx

EndeavorRx is a prescription video game designed to help children aged 8-12 with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) improve their focus and attention span. Developed by Akili Interactive, the game requires players to navigate through different environments, collecting targets and avoiding obstacles, stimulating areas of the brain related to attention.

It is similar to SUBWAY SURFER.

I made a research about this subject and i found only 1 digital solution competitive for game training for childern with ADHD.

Advantages:

-Provides a non-pharmaceutical option for children with ADHD.

-Encourages engagement through gameplay, making the therapy enjoyable for young users.

-Can be used in conjunction with traditional treatments.

Disadvantages:

-There is no narrative for the game, and no explanatory about every level

-Effectiveness varies, and some children may not respond significantly to the game.

-Requires regular gameplay to achieve results, which could be challenging for some users to maintain.

Conclusion: EndeavorRx offers a groundbreaking, fun, and innovative approach to managing ADHD symptoms in children, providing a complementary tool to traditional treatments. However, it may not be suitable for all patients and should be considered part of a broader therapeutic strategy.

WIREFRAMES

The goal was to creat the backgrounds of every level looks like it's "loaded" with visual distruptions, but still feels like is had huge sapce for concentration. So after researching a lot, i found how to creat the space i wanted. I made every background with frontal vanishing point, and animated it . the background was pastel colored, so it won't be too distrupting.
